The recent decision by Birmingham City University (BCU) to axe its Black studies MA program has sparked a heated debate and an open letter signed by over 100 academics, writers, and activists worldwide. This move comes on the heels of the controversial closure of BCU's undergraduate Black studies course in 2024, which has raised concerns about the erasure of Black studies from UK higher education. The situation is particularly concerning given the financial crisis engulfing UK universities, with claims that cost-cutting measures disproportionately affect Black scholarship. The MA program's closure threatens the careers of five Black staff members, including Prof Kehinde Andrews, a pioneer in the field. Andrews' open letter to the university's board of governors highlights the deeply flawed and potentially discriminatory decision-making process, emphasizing the erasure of Black intellectual thought. The letter also cites the redundancy of Prof Hakim Adi, who was made redundant by the University of Chichester in 2023, as a worrying trend. The signatories, including Prof Kalwant Bhopal, Yomi Adegoke, Akala, and Marsha de Cordova, argue that the closure of the BCU MA course reinforces Eurocentric knowledge and Whiteness, silencing Black students and academics from challenging racism in higher education. The university's response, however, claims that the course closures are due to low demand and that alternative provisions are being explored. Yet, the haste of the decision and the lack of consultation with staff and students raise questions about the true reasons behind the cuts. This incident underscores the ongoing struggle to preserve and promote Black intellectual scholarship in the face of financial constraints and systemic biases in higher education.
