Racing NSW has disqualified Brian Carey, a stablehand and registered owner, following the tragic death of his racehorse, City Limits, in Maryborough. The stewards' investigation revealed that the horse was left without adequate food and water, leading to its demise. Mr. Carey, who resides in Sydney, was found guilty of negligence in ensuring the horse's proper care and welfare. As a result, he has been disqualified from holding a license for 16 months and must reapply for a stablehand license. The six-year-old gelding was discovered in a severely malnourished state on Mr. Carey's property in January, three months after sustaining a leg injury during training. The stewards determined that Mr. Carey placed the horse in the care of individuals with limited experience in horse handling and equine husbandry, without proper supervision or safeguards. This incident has sparked a broader discussion on animal welfare and the responsibilities of racehorse owners. Lisa Simpson, a neighbor in Maryborough, expressed her sentiment, stating that Mr. Carey should be charged under the animal cruelty act and should never own a horse again. The RSPCA Victoria has confirmed an ongoing investigation into the alleged animal cruelty, and further comments are expected from the organization.
