Santa Vall 2026: The Ultimate Gravel Racing Adventure (2026)

The Ultimate Contrast: Bike Racing's Hellish Challenge, Photographer's Heavenly Experience

Imagine a photographer's first encounter with the gritty world of gravel racing, where nature's fury adds an unexpected twist.

Harry Talbot, a seasoned road racing photographer, shares his eye-opening journey to Santa Vall, a race that, until recently, was off his radar.

"I heard the rain, and I smiled. Probably the only one in Girona feeling cheerful on that Friday before Santa Vall. I'm used to the glamour of the road racing calendar, standing by the Dolomites for the Giro d'Italia. So, why would I want to trade that for peanut butter mud in Kansas?"

But here's where it gets intriguing: Santa Vall, a two-stage race and the inaugural event of the Gravel Earth Series, offered more than just off-road challenges. It presented a unique blend of technical trails, steep climbs, and breathtaking scenery around Girona, Spain.

"When I was asked to shoot Santa Vall, my initial reaction was lukewarm. It felt... well, small. No flashy WorldTour kits, fewer fans, and unfamiliar faces on the bikes. But little did I know, this race would become a turning point."

Behind the Lens: A Mountain's Impact

One of cycling's iconic mountains, Finestre, left an indelible mark on Talbot's photography journey.

"I envisioned dry, dusty trails, but instead, I got a deluge. And you know what? I loved it! It reminded me of the legendary Paris-Roubaix in 2021, when Sonny Colbrelli emerged victorious. A race I missed, but one that taught me a valuable lesson: sometimes, it's not about the big names, but the story behind the lens."

Why 'Bike Racing in Hell'?

"The conditions were harsh, but for me, it was heaven. I felt alive, capturing the raw, unfiltered essence of cycling. It's this contrast that makes Santa Vall so captivating."

So, what do you think? Has Talbot's perspective on gravel racing changed your view? Or do you still prefer the glitz and glamour of WorldTour events? Share your thoughts in the comments below! We'd love to hear your take on this unique racing experience.
