Huawei's latest smartphone offerings, the Pura 90s Pro and Pro Max, are set to make a global impact, marking a significant shift from the company's previous strategies. These devices are an intriguing blend of powerful specifications and a unique design approach, especially with their telephoto camera capabilities and global availability.
The Pura 90s Pro Max is a standout feature, boasting the industry's first 200MP RYYB sensor, a significant upgrade from the previous year's models. This sensor, paired with an f/2.6 lens and 4x optical zoom, offers a fixed zoom system, eliminating the complexity of switchable lenses. Huawei's commitment to yellow sub-pixels over green is evident, and the 20x telephoto video capability, made possible by real-time RAW processing, further enhances the camera's capabilities.
The main camera also features a 1/1.28” sensor with 50MP resolution and LOFIC technology, delivering a wider dynamic range. The OIS-enabled lens, with an adjustable aperture from f/1.4 to f/4.0, adds versatility. Additionally, a 40MP ultra-wide camera with a RYYB sensor and f/2.2 lens provides further imaging options.
The Pro model, while slightly more compact, shares many specifications with the Pro Max. It features a 6.6” LTPO panel with a 1-120Hz refresh rate and 1,256 x 2,760px resolution, protected by second-generation Kunlun Glass. The Pro Max, on the other hand, boasts a larger 6.9” display with a higher resolution and original Kunlun Glass, offering enhanced scratch and drop resistance.
Both phones are powered by the Kirin 9030S, a new chip from HiSilicon, and support 5G connectivity, a notable change from previous global Huawei phones. They also feature 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage, running HarmonyOS. The batteries are 6,000mAh, but EU regulations result in a lower capacity of 5,270mAh for units sold in the Union.
The design is a key differentiator, with Huawei opting to paint the metal frames to match the colorful gradients of the rear panels, adding a pop of color to the Orange Ocean, Blush Gold, Blaze Purple, and Graphite Black options for the Pro Max, and Guava Soda, Coconut White, Orange Soda, and Mulberry Black for the Pro.
The phones are rated IP68 for submersion and IP69 for water jet resistance. The Pro Max, at 230g and 8.1mm thick, is slightly heavier and thinner than the Pro, which weighs 213g and measures 8.2mm. The launch details for these devices are yet to be announced, but the global availability and powerful specifications make them a highly anticipated release in the smartphone market.
